FF's Handle Water Rescue, Trauma, and Pinjob - 5/20/13
Monday evening, after dropping the high school baseball team off at school when they won the district championship, the bus carrying the students was involved in an accident.
On County Route 12, two vehicles, the bus and a pick-up, were traveling at normal speeds along the narrow road leading to the Mayor John H. Griffin Memorial Bridge. As the two vehicles neared the bridge, the bus, clinging a little too tight to the bend in the road, crossed the median. As the two vehicles neared each other even more, the pick-up swerved to avoid the bus. The bus swerved as well, causing it to flip over on its side. This ejected the driver through the windshield, decapitating her. The pick-up veered off the bridge, crashing nose first into the Brenton River, sending both passengers into the water. One, clung for dear life on the embankment, while the suffered massive head trauma and drowned soon after.
The incident was discovered by two hikers who immediately called 911. The dispatcher quickly toned out Washington Heights, who was handling a fire alarm at the time, to the scene. Engine 2-12’s quarters was only a few miles away, and arrived on scene first to find two men in the water. Firefighters quickly went in after them, using ropes and water safety devices. Rescue 1-12 arrived next. They went to work on the bus, only to find the lone occupant, the driver, decapitated and covered in blood. They soon made their way over to Engine 2’s crew to assist with the water rescue. Wagon 1-12 responded in place of Engine 1-12, who was tied up at the fire alarm. Firefighters had rescued the man on the embankment, and transported him ALS with head injuries and an abdominal puncture. The man floating in the water unconscious was rescued and presumed dead by paramedics on scene. The scene was turned over the local and state authorities around 19:06 and fire units cleared soon after
