Operations
The Washington Heights Emergency Medical Service provides an array of services from emergency medical care to event stand by's. The men and women who serve along side the Washington Heights Fire Company and Washington Heights Crash-Fire-Rescue are some of the best trained in the area. EMT's are certified to the EMT-A level, allowing them to perform some ALS skills to better help the citizens of Washington Heights. EMT's fill out the EMS calender, guaranteeing a full crew in the station always ready to respond as soon as the call is dispatched, day and night! WHEMS has its own building, located on the beach front, closer to downtown, and operated different types of vehicles from ambulances to first responder apparatus to ensure proper care and service is delivered. We are proud to say that with our continued commitment and care, we are proud to serve the citizens and visitors of our city!
Information
The Washington Heights Volunteer Ambulance Service was founded in 1973 when a group of volunteers banded together to better serve the community. The group all attended one of the first EMT-B classes in the early 70's and has been practicing ever since. Previously, the service provided a transport service only, and the first response was provided by the fire department, however, we now first respond as well, and provide more services such as assistance with hazardous materials response and technical rescue. The Washington Heights Ambulance Service operates out of one station, located across from the Company Two fire station and operates three ambulances, and first response vehicle and a light rescue. We operate alongside the Washington Heights Volunteer Fire Department, but we are separate entities and have separate budgets as well as different memberships.
