Pettingil is a very busy place. Sitting on the coast of Moonlit Lake, the facility sees many modes of transportation, from water vessel to rail service. These services transport raw and finished product in, around, and out of the little city of a campus. Nearly 10,000 employees work at the mill every day, 24-Hours a day, 7-Days a week. There are amenities onsite such as cafeterias, rest areas, and hygiene areas, on top of the many buildings used for production and warehouses.
Annually, Pettingil produces around 6.8 net-tons of raw steel. Products such as sheet products, strip mill plate in coils and tin products. Hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet products are produced for customers in the automotive, metal building components, home construction and appliance markets.
Tin mill products are used by customers in the container industry in the manufacture of food and beverage containers, aerosol cans, paint cans and pails, and more.
This steel mill is one of the largest in the area, and with such a large facility, comes many hazards. Firefighters are trained in many aspects of rescue work, such as; Confined Space, Rope Rescue, Machinery Rescue, Man-In-Machine Emergencies, Water Rescue, Transit Rescue and Specialized Emergency Medical Care, on top of fire suppression. Crews are trained on every square inch of the facility, knowing each building, fire suppression system, and transit routes inside and out.
